Diamond Sourcing

At Stelios Jewellers, we believe the story behind every diamond is just as important as its brilliance. Our diamond sourcing practices reflect our commitment to ethical sourcing, environmental conservation, and the finest quality natural diamonds and gemstones available anywhere in the world. Whether you are searching for a rare pink diamond, a brilliant white stone, or a vibrant blue sapphire, we are here to help you trace its origin with confidence and transparency.

A Global Network of Reputable Suppliers

With decades of experience in the diamond industry, we have established trusted relationships with diamond suppliers and gemstone traders across Africa, Canada, India, Hong Kong, Russia and other countries. These connections allow us to source diamonds and coloured stones of exceptional quality, clarity, and carat weight. From the diamond mines of South Africa and Botswana to the laboratories of Canada, we work only with suppliers who adhere to responsible sourcing practices.

All diamonds we source are vetted through stringent ethical guidelines, ensuring compliance with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. This global initiative helps eliminate the trade of conflict diamonds and promotes transparency throughout the supply chain. Our suppliers must demonstrate fair wage practices, respect for local laws, and alignment with human rights standards.

Natural Diamonds and Ethical Sourcing

The vast majority of our diamonds are natural, mined stones. These come from reputable mining operations in countries such as Botswana, Canada, and South Africa, where environmental impact and social responsibility are key considerations. Diamonds are extracted from the earth’s surface through mining processes that vary widely in their adherence to ethical standards. We take care to ensure that each rough diamond we purchase is conflict free and has been sourced in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

The diamond industry employs around 10 million people worldwide, both directly and indirectly. Ethical diamond mining must not involve child labour, exploitation, or dangerous working conditions. It is essential that communities that rely on diamond mining receive benefits such as improved infrastructure and essential social services. Certified diamonds must not originate from conflict zones where proceeds are used to fund wars. Many companies now pledge to promote transparency and accountability in their diamond supply chains

As awareness grows about the role of diamond mining in developing countries, we remain committed to supporting sustainable economic growth in these regions. Ethical diamond sourcing contributes to the well-being of communities in Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other African nations where diamonds are a significant source of income.

Understanding the Kimberly Process

The Kimberley Process was established in 2000 to combat the trade of conflict diamonds. It requires the issuance of a certificate for each mined rough diamond and has been adopted by many countries to ensure diamond origins are secure and revenues are invested in development. There are currently 59 participants representing 85 countries in the Kimberley Process certification scheme.

This international certification framework began in response to civil wars funded by diamonds in several African countries. Since its implementation, the presence of conflict diamonds on the global market has dropped from 4 percent to less than 1 percent. The Kimberley Process continues to provide accountability and traceability for natural diamonds.

Lab Grown and Lab Created Diamonds

For clients seeking a sustainable or alternative option, we also offer a premium selection of lab grown diamonds. These stones are physically, chemically, and visually identical to mined diamonds, but are produced using controlled laboratory conditions. Lab created diamonds offer an environmentally conscious option with full traceability. They are certified to the same standards as natural diamonds and provide excellent value while aligning with sustainability goals.

Lab-grown diamonds are made in laboratories using either high-pressure, high-temperature or chemical vapour deposition methods. The production of these diamonds can result in significant carbon output depending on the energy source used. However, they leave the earth undisturbed by mining and create less material waste. Lab-grown diamonds are also known for providing a more transparent diamond supply chain, allowing for easier monitoring of fair labour conditions.

While often marketed as a greener option, their environmental impact depends on production methods. Nonetheless, they remain a cost-effective alternative, typically priced lower than natural diamonds while offering equivalent brilliance and durability.

Coloured Diamonds and Precious Stones

Stelios Jewellers specialises in rare coloured diamonds, including blue, red, and pink diamonds, as well as fine coloured gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds, and rubies. These stones are sourced from various regions across the globe, including India, Sri Lanka, Colombia, and Australia. Each gemstone is evaluated for clarity, carat, and origin to meet the highest standards of the fine jewellery market.

We assist clients in sourcing diamonds and gemstones for personal collections, investment portfolios, or inclusion in self managed superannuation funds. Our experienced team provides legal documentation and access to insured storage solutions for storing high value items.

Transparency Across the Supply Chain

Transparency is essential to responsible diamond sourcing. That is why we offer detailed reports on the origin, certification, and characteristics of every stone we source. Whether the diamond comes from Canadian mines, African countries, or laboratory facilities, we help you trace its path from source to jewellery.

We work with internationally recognised gemological laboratories to ensure independent verification and certification. These include grading reports that assess the diamond’s carat, clarity, colour, and cut, as well as confirmation of its ethical origins.

Sustainable Practices and Diamond Origins

Our approach to diamond sourcing includes a strong focus on environmental conservation and community support. Sustainable practices aim to minimise environmental impact and ensure fair labour conditions across the diamond industry. The global diamond sector employs approximately 10 million people directly and indirectly.

Diamonds help finance schools, hospitals, and infrastructure in many remote regions. Companies such as With Clarity ensure their suppliers source diamonds from mines outside of conflict zones. The industry is also committed to reducing carbon footprints and minimising waste where possible.

Diamonds are currently mined from multiple regions around the world including African nations, Russia, Canada, Australia, India, and Brazil. There are 15 diamond-producing countries in Africa alone, including Botswana, South Africa, Angola, and Namibia. Today, less than 50 percent of diamonds come from African mines.

The top six diamond-producing countries globally are Russia, Botswana, Canada, Angola, South Africa, and Namibia. Russia is the leading producer in terms of both carat volume and dollar value, with reserves estimated to exceed one billion carats. Canada began producing diamonds in the early 1990s and has since become a trusted source of ethically sourced stones. The USA has only one active diamond mine, located in Arkansas.
